10 TIPS TO DESTRESS YOUR DAY

Hello everyone!

I know that most of you have experienced a stressful day or period in your life, that’s completely normal. This post today is to give you some tips and maybe some ideas on how you can destress your day without any drastic changes. I use these methods myself and I want to share my experience with you.

  1. Make time for breakfast

I know that when you’re stressed or when you’re in a hurry, skipping breakfast seems like such an easy step. Don’t do that.

Sitting down to eat your breakfast forces you to sit still and just enjoy your food. It gives you a break and prepares your mind and your body for the maybe stressful day that’s coming up.

Plus: You can’t think on an empty stomach. You will perform much better when you had breakfast opposed to when you skipped your meal.

  1. Go outside

When you’re at work or at school you’re inside most of the day. When you get home, you almost always hang around inside as well. To really relax, you have to get outside. If you have a dog, take it on a long beautiful walk. And if you don’t have a dog, take a walk yourself. Nature relaxes you and the fresh air does wonders for your mood.

Maybe go by foot or bike to the store instead of taking your car? It’s the little things that do it.

  1. Music

I don’t like silence. I like to have background noise to my life. And I prefer background music. Put on some nice music, maybe a relaxing playlist and go about your day. Maybe put on some of your favourite tunes while you’re cooking, I always do it and a cooking – dance party is amazing.

Your head will be much clearer and the silence won’t put as much pressure on you. An impromptu dance party will instantly relief you of a lot of stress.

  1. Watch or read something inspiring

If you are an avid reader like me, you will probably find reading very relaxing. If you’re not really a reader you can also watch something inspiring. Maybe you like looking through Instagram or WeHeartIt or Pinterest.

If you watch or read things you like, you will destress a little and get more motivated to do what needs to get done.

  1. Exercise

I don’t really like exercising but I do enjoy swimming. So I go swimming one day in the week and it is really relaxing. Find a sport that you like and then exercising becomes a great stress relief. Your mind is totally on your body and your movements and afterwards you have that great just – worked – out – feeling.

You do get more energy after you worked out and you will be more motivated for the rest of the day.

  1. Food

I already told you not to skip breakfast but other food is also important. If you are like me and you want to eat healthy but you are a real sweet tooth inside, don’t force yourself to eat very healthy when you’re stressed.

You will only get more stressed if you’re doing something you don’t like. If you need the comfort of sweet, greasy or high carb food, then go for it. Nothing is as relaxing as enjoying your favourite food.

If I’m super stressed, I just get a chocolate bar and enjoy every bite of it. It really helps me stay sane in some cases.

  1. Take care of your skin

Stress leads to breakouts. Nobody likes breakouts so it’s very important to take care of your skin. Clean your skin, moisturize and detox it. If you take good care of your skin, you will decrease the risk of getting breakouts and if you do get them, they will disappear quicker.

Also, nobody can tell me that a good face mask isn’t relaxing. Put a mask on, get yourself a good glass of wine (or whatever you like) and take a bath or watch some TV. This is relaxing at its best.

  1. Cuddling

Cuddling is a great stress relief. It doesn’t really matter who you cuddle with. It can be your partner, you kid, your dog, your mom, your favourite teddy bear or just a pillow. Cuddling gives you the extra love you probably need in a stressful situation.

  1. Take a nap

It may sound stressful to waste time but if you’re really stressed out a nap can do wonders. Stress is horrible for your sleeping pattern so you will probably feel a bit tired during the day. If you can’t get the sleep you need at night because the stress keeps you up, just take a short nap.

If you are tired, don’t grab caffeine. Just take a nap because a power nap will boost your memory, cognitive skills, creativity and energy level. All you need.

But be careful. Try to take naps for 15 to 20 minutes because naps of that length will keep you in the lightest state of non – REM sleep which will make it easier for you to get up. If you nap for more than 30 minutes you will enter the deeper stages of sleep and you will wake up with a sleep – hangover. You will feel even more tired.

But if you can sleep for 90 minutes, that’s even better than a short nap. Your body will have time to make it through one whole sleep cycle so you’ll wake up feeling very refreshed.

  1. Do something creative

If you occupy your brain with something you like or something creative, you will stimulate different parts of your brain. Maybe play an instrument, cook something, draw, paint or journal. Letting your emotions out through something creative will be really helpful if you want to destress your day and life.
